Numerous archaeological remains dating back to 5000 B.C testify that Colonella, a little town cradled on top of a high hill near the Tronto river, has been inhabited ever since prehistoric times. The village has conserved up to today its original architectural late Middle-Ages structure. A long and characteristic Stairway, symbol of the village, leads to the historical centre where the16th-century Clock tower, “la Torre dell’Orologio”, stands. The historical centre stretches between narrow lanes, mediaeval palaces and evocative squares.
The presence of a prehistoric village in the hamlet of Ripoli, testifies that men have been settling around Corropoli ever since neolithic times. Today, cradled among hills, this little village has preserved numerous artistic and cultural testimonies of its long history. One of these is the Abbey Badia di Santa Maria ad Majulanum, which was built by Benedictines from Cassino on top of the remains of a pagan temple dedicated to the Goddess Flora, further the Baroque Parish of Sant’Agnese. The square Piazza Pié di Corte with its beautiful 19th-century fountain is the most evocative of the historical centre.
