The city has ancient origins. Testimony of Roman times, with the emperors Augustus and Hadrian, are the temples, baths, the theater, the amphitheater and a number of monuments now submerged by the new city.
To see: In the heart of the city stands the Basilica Cathedral: built in 1158, enlarged from the fourteenth century until today with several interventions. The entrance dates back to 1332: on the exterior columns are the statues of the Annunciation, in the triangular pediment are enclosed a beautiful rose window. Inside the Basilica there are remnants of frescoes, while the ceiling is decorated with antique motifs. The Roman Theatre, not far from the Cathedral, probably dates back to 30 B.C. The set of steps reserved for the public, of a diameter of 78 meters, built in travertine and resting on twenty arches, could accommodate about three thousand spectators. To the west of the theater stands the Amphitheatre, of the third and fourth centuries.
