Camosciara

Camosciara

This protected area owes its name to the large population of chamois who lives here. Founded as a royal hunting ground, later it formed the nucleus around which developed the Abruzzi National Park.
The Camosciara is a natural amphitheater formed by spectacular limestone walls and is one of the best known places in the park. The excursion is suitable also for novice hikers and is ideal for spending a day in the lush greenery of the Abruzzi Mountains. The Camosciara is located along the road connecting Pescasseroli and Villetta Barrea. Once you park the car you continue on foot.

Don’t forget a visit at: the Lake San Domenico – an artificial lake formed by creating a dam on the river Sagittarius with the Hermitage of San Domenico; the Lake of Scanno is the largest natural lake in the region where you can take a ride on a pedal boat or canoe or stroll along its banks. The village of Scanno offers some fascinating and charming views, it seems that time has stood still since it is still possible to see the women of the village dressed with traditional costumes. The craftsmanship of Scanno includes unique pieces such as “Presentosa”, a pendant shaped like a rose donated by parents in-law to the bride on the day of the wedding vows. Continuing you reach the Lake of Barrea on whose shores lies Villetta Barrea, one of the most beautiful towns of Abruzzi.
