Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli Piceno

One of the most interesting cities in Italy, for the extraordinary urban fabric in which are found ruins from various epochs, the only common denominator is the local travertine. In Ascoli you admire the middle Ages and Renaissance, next to the ruins of Roman era. Piazza del Popolo is the “heart” of the city, a real living room listed as one of the most beautiful Italian squares, overlooked by the Palace of the Captains of the People – with inside an archaeological path, the Gothic church of San Francesco, some buildings in the Renaissance style, with porches and battlements. Ascoli Piceno offers a cuisine that reserves, among other things, the exclusive specialty of stuffed fried olives.
The first Sunday of August, the city takes the appearance of a time. The “Giostra della Quintana” of Ascoli is a contest of skill and dexterity: six knights, each representing a city district as in ancient urban subdivision, compete to win the Palio; to note the spectacular parade that winds through the streets of the city until you reach the competition field, which counts about 1500 participants.
